Sexual Wellness in Women
Sexual wellness in women is dependent upon multiple factors – but one of the most important of those is a woman’s willingness to seek help when needed. Women who assume age-related issues cannot be helped and do nothing will miss out on the many available paths to a lifetime of good sexual health. At Revitalize Anti Aging Centers, we employ the most effective techniques medical science can offer to help patients enjoy fulfilling sex lives throughout middle age and well into their senior years.
Menopause, Hormones, and Sexual Health
As women go through menopause, the levels of several hormones they produce decrease. These hormone insufficiencies and imbalances can lead to decreased interest in sex, lowered arousal, painful sex, and overall reduced quality of life. Indeed, about three-quarters of women who have problems in these areas can be found to have hormonal imbalances.
Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all play important roles in a woman’s level of desire and arousal. Estrogen deficiencies and imbalances can cause mood swings, depression, vaginal dryness, and painful intercourse. Fluctuating progesterone levels in women have been linked to low sexual desire in women, while testosterone levels in women (normally about one-tenth those in men) are also closely linked to sexual desire, arousal, and ability to achieve an orgasm.
Not all menopause-related sexual problems can be blamed on just one hormone or group of hormones, however. While estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone imbalances are the main causes of decreased desire and arousal in women, other hormones such as DHEA, cortisol, and thyroid hormone also play a significant part in female sexual function. Stress and high levels of cortisol in women can lead to fatigue, depression, weight gain, and low libido. Thyroid hormone is also important in women; it affects metabolism, sleep cycles, energy levels, weight, and a patient’s overall sense of well-being.
Other Causes of Sexual Health Issues in Women
Women don’t have to be peri-menopausal or post-menopausal to experience problems in their sexual wellness; hormones can be a factor even before menopause. Various medications, psychological issues (depression, anxiety, etc.) pregnancy, breastfeeding, and painful sex due to a variety of factors can also contribute to decreased sexual desire, arousal, and ability to have a fulfilling sex life at any age.
Lifelong Sexual Wellness for Women is Possible!
Fortunately, there is much that can be done to foster a lifetime of good sexual health.
- Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can rebalance a woman’s natural hormones. BHRT has been shown to increase sexual desire and arousal, as well as improving libido and sexual satisfaction in many women.
- DHEA is a precursor of testosterone. It has been found that treating women with DHEA results in increased interest in sex, greater arousal, and better performance.
- Good nutrition, exercise, proper sleep patterns, good mental health, and the ability to limit stress are all powerful tools in improving one’s quality of life and sexual wellness. We can help in these areas as well.
